Quando utilizzare

The subjunctive past tense is used when the subjunctive clause happens before the main clause or when the main clause itself is in the past tense. Learn when to use the subjunctive here. The English equivalents are as follows:

Subjunctive perfect tense
The tense that is composed with the '-ed' ending.

Es. I'm happy that you came yesterday.
Subjunctive past perfect tense
The tense that is composed as had plus the past participle.

Es. She feared that he had died.

Elle est contente que j'aie pu venir hier.

She is happy that I was able to come yesterday.

Tu peux t'inscrire, quoique tu aies déjà suivi ce cours.

You can register, although you have already done this course.

Je craignais qu'il n'ait réussi pas l'examen.

I was worried that he had failed the exam.

Come coniugare

Conjugate the verb avoir (to have) in the subjunctive present tense and use the past participle.

With some verbs you will need to conjugate the verb être (to be), instead of avoir (to have), in the subjunctive present tense and use the past participle. There are only a small handfull of these verbs, find all être verbs and more information here.

Replacing past perfect tense
The subjunctive past tense replaces the subjunctive past perfect tense, the plus-que-parfait, when not writing because the subjunctive plus-que-parfait is reserved for literary works. It is an irregularity where adhering to correct grammar may make you appear overbearing or stuffy. For example, the following sentence is the rule, although the Académie française may not like it.

Je ne savais pas que tu l'aies regardé.
I didn't know that you watched it.

The following sentence is how the above should be written. If you are writing a novel, a newspaper, etc. you can use the following sentence:

Je ne savais pas que tu l'eusses regardé.
I didn't know that you watched it.
