Verbs that require prepositions

Learn which verbs need to be followed by a preposition in French when they are auxiliary or modal verbs or introducers.

Prepositions are words that are used to show a relationship in space or time or a logical relationship between two or more people, places or things. Prepositions are most commonly followed by a noun or verb. This article discusses prepositions that are used in French to introduce a verb only. These prepositions are normally short words, such as to, of or in. Languages differ in when they use prepositions, and as such, many verbs that are auxiliary, modal or introducers in French will require prepositions that aren't required in English or vice versa. The most common of these prepositions are à (to) and de (of).

Eg. 1)
Same in English and French.
Aspirer à devenir enseignant
To aspire to become a teacher

Eg. 2)
Different in English and French.
Essayer de devenir enseignant
To try to become a teacher

Eg. 3)
No preposition in French.
Aller devenir enseignant
To go to become a teacher

Eg. 4)
No preposition in English.
Achever de devenir enseignant
To finish becoming a teacher

The following two lists of verbs that require the prepositions, à and de, will need to be memorized as there is no pattern or rule to know which preposition is required.
